New Gluten-Free from General Mills!

by Jay on March 14, 2009

gf-chex

Did this one sneak by everybody or was it just me? I knew about the Rice Chex being gluten-free but not Corn Chex! The Corn Chex, in my opinion, taste way WAY WAY better than the Rice Chex do. I just found these at Wal-Mart tonight (yes, I know…I live a very exciting life to be grocery shopping at Wal-Mart on a Saturday night. I don’t judge you, so leave me alone!).
I came home and looked up Corn Chex on the General Mills site, and this new one is still not listed as of this posting. It looks like they took out the barley malt and replaced it brown sugar syrup. I know it seems weird to get excited about a cereal, but that’s not why I am excited. What I am excited about is that a company like General Mills is starting to take us seriously! Thank you General Mills!
Update: This from Zach: “Hey, I was contacted by General Mills today and the following products will be officially launched as labeled GF on June 1, 2009 (Corn Chex, Honey Nut Chex, Chocolate Chex, Strawberry Chex, Cinnamon Chex)”
Thanks Zach!

I am so excited too! I was just thinking last week if they can make rice chex gluten free, why not corn chex? This is news to me. So awesome!!!!! I will probably mix the rice and corn chex together.

Wow! That’s great! But didn’t you take a big handful out and try them right away? How are they??

Just read on forum that honey rice chex and strawberry chex has been reformulated too. I am so proud of General Mills.

When I was first diagnosed, I thought these were automatically gluten free… I was wrong! They changed over their formulations late last year and the new packaging came out in January. Make sure you buy the one that is clearly marked “Gluten Free” on the front of the box, I’ve seen older boxes on shelves yet!

You just made my day! Corn Chex are my fav too, they have more of a crunch. Actually I was so excited when the Rice Chex went GF that I emailed General Mills to ask about the Corn Chex (that was about 3 months ago). The response was that they had no plans to make Corn Chex GF. I guess they changed their minds. Woo Hoo!

Jay, I can completely get EXCITED ABOUT GF grown up cereal! I’m not much of a morning cereal person but I love it for a snack and especially with milk before 9 PM! I like Maryland’s idea of mixing them and don’t forget to make Muddy Buddies – YUM!

The corn and or rice make a great substitute for bread crumbs in meatloaf and lots of dishes! Just put them in a big zip lock bag and take your rolling pin to them or release your tension and smoosh the bag in your hands… YEAH GENERAL MILLS!

Has anyone noticed the Cinnamon Chex on the General Mills website are Gluten Free. I just Emailed the Rice Krispies people and asked why they couldn’t catch up with General Mills and rid themselves of Barley Malt in cereals? We can hope this is a trend!!!

YEA!!!!!! My daughter is SO excited! She loves Rice Chex but we have talked about how sad it was that the Corn Chex were not GF. I am so glad they did this.

Thanks for letting us know!!

This is the best news I’ve heard all day. Chex (both rice and corn) have been my favorite cereal since I was a kid. I was so sad to give them up when I went GF. Yay, and yay for General Mills!

This is very exciting indeed!! Thank you so much. I’ll have to go check out the grocery store now.

wow…that sneaked up on me, too – but HOORAY for more reasonably-priced GF options!

jen March 15, 2009 at 8:26 pm

AAH!! I literally screamed with happiness when I read this! I agree with you that corn chex tastes WAY better and I’ve missed it so much. YES!!!

Kathi March 16, 2009 at 1:07 am

Let’s do the math:
GF cereal + commonly available in regular supermarket + reasonable price + won’t break your teeth + tastes good = life is good :)

Amy March 16, 2009 at 9:05 am

This is so exciting! Such great steps for the (growing) GF community!

Jessica March 16, 2009 at 9:24 am

Thank you SO much for posting this! Can’t wait to have Corn Chex for the first time since I was diagnosed! And hey, I’ve been known to go cereal shopping in Target and get excited by stuff like this on a Saturday night too. It’s a good time.

shelley March 16, 2009 at 2:39 pm

it is SO not silly to be excited!! i sooo miss cereal. now if they could take out the barley malt from Rice Crispies and i will be in HEAVEN!! i am on my way to my WalMart right now…yay yay!!

Jenn March 18, 2009 at 8:46 am

Great news! Now I’m waiting for corn pops to be gluten free again. Get rid of the barley malt in cereals!

Wow! We are all thrilled to hear this news at the Celiac Support Group of Magic Valley, Twin Falls, Idaho. Now if we can just get those Rice Krispies!

Valerie April 3, 2009 at 2:25 pm

I couldn’t be more excited about this if I tried! I absolutely love Corn Chex. Rice Chex aren’t bad, but nothing beats Corn Chex!

Jim August 9, 2009 at 4:27 pm

There are still boxes of the previous formulation being sold, so be sure to check.
